Five Twin Harborites named to first-team all-state football
The Daily World
Five Twin Harborites received first-team recognition on the Associated Press all-state football team announced Thursday.
Elma linebacker Ricky Escalante, Raymond offensive lineman James Hamilton, Raymond linebacker Darol Ratsavongsy, Wishkah back Keigan Gardiner and Wishkah offensive lineman Trey Berge were named to the first teams in their respective classifications.
Ratsavongsy also received second-team recognition as a running back. Other Twin Harborites named to the second team included Aberdeen defensive lineman Chase Johnson, Montesano offensive lineman Evan Bialkowsky, North Beach lineman Caleb Bridge, Raymond defensive lineman Hunter Borden and Wishkah defensive lineman Dillon Mitchell.
Bridge was included on the second team on both offense and defense.
Balloting was conducted by state sports writers and compiled by the Yakima Herald-Republic.
Gardiner achieved what may have been a milestone for Harbor athletes. The Wishkah senior was a three-way first-team selection — on offense, defense and as an all-purpose player.
As a running back, Gardiner for 1,579 yards, caught 26 passes for 603 yards. A converted quarterback, he also passed for 535 yards.
He was also named as a defensive back, where he had 78 tackles, intercepted nine passed and recorded nine sacks on blitzes. Gardiner finished with 3,651 yards and scored 51 touchdowns.
The Evergreen 1A League’s Defensive Most Valuable Player, Elma’s Escalante had a hand in 86 tackles — 43 primary stops and 43 assists — and was credited with seven sacks.
Ratsavongsy was the Pacific League’s Most Valuable Player. An 1,000-yard rusher, he was also a stalwart as a linebacker, averaging eight tackles per game.
Hamilton was one of the cornerstones of an offensive line that supported a lethal running game for Raymond’s state semifinalists.
Berge did a good share of the blocking for a Wishkah attack that produced a pair of 1,000-yard rushers.
Camas quarterback Reilly Hennessey was chosen as the state all-classification Player of the Year. Other Players of the Year in their respective classifications were Bellevue’s Budda Baker in 3A, Lynden’s Trent Postman in 2A, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague’s Dylan Hartz in 2B and Neah Bay’s Josiah Greene in 1B. Freeman’s Markus Goldback and Zillah’s Brady Widner shared the honor in 1A.
