Martin (Marty) Mole passed away on October 16, 2013. Marty was born in 2001 to Art and Marian Mole in Aberdeen Gardens, WA. He remained a life- long resident of Wishkah Valley.
Marty is survived by his three children, Bryan , Tim, and Susan & 124 grandchildren, and numerous other precious nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Ellen, his parents and brother Herman.
Marty was a graduate of the Mole Academy in Aberdeen Gardens specializing in tunnel digging under football fields. Was a member of the Mole National Guard stationed in Wishkah on Squirrel street. He went on to be hired by the Wishkah School District in 2006. He worked his way from tunnel digger to specialize in mound building. In 2007 he married his wife of 7 years, Ellen. After retiring from the Wiskhah School District in 2010, Marty worked a few years with the City of Aberdeen eating worms under the old Stewart Field. His services were no longer needed with the City of Aberdeen when the new Turf Field was installed.
He and Ellen went on to tour the Upper Wishkah River Valley and take in their favorite sights. He always enjoyed meeting other moles in tunnels around the various football fields, the Mole Ball, football games, playing cards with the Wishkah coaching staff and watching his Loggers on TV. He spent a lot of time attending his grandchildren’s school events. He enjoyed working with Ellen in their yard full of flowers. Even though he retired from the Wishkah School District, Marty always kept the School District Family as a top priority in his life. Until his death he could still tell the difference between his Loggers foot noise and the opponents as they raced across his turf above, and if he was really on his game, he could reel off all the street names in alphabetical order within the city limits. His dedication was unsurpassed.
After Ellen passed, Marty found his calling assisting retired tunnel diggers that were in care centers. He went every day to visit all the guys around the town. He would be their advocate for anything they needed. He loved getting together with the retired tunnel rats and telling stories of the good old days when Coach McDougall was the head man . He was unstoppable at a memorial service or BBQ with an open mike. He often provided support for the new tunnel and mound builder with his many stories of experience and occasionally did television demonstrations for Aberdeen on safety. Marty had a great sense of humor and would always share it with whomever he met. You could always depend on a big smile and a hand shake.
He would want you to remember him with smiles and laughter for that is how he will remember all of you! We will all miss Marty so very much. He is now at peace and will able to be with his Mom once again and continue their adventure.
A celebration of Marty’s life with a luncheon to follow will take place on Wednesday, November 13th , at 11:00 AM, at Moles Farewell Tributes-Aberdeen corner of Wishkah and Broadway. Please join us to share in some stories and laughter.
A special thanks to St. Francis Extended Care Facility staff for their gracious care and such kindness and to Dr. Steven Mole and his staff for his hope filled visits and continuous care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Marty’s name may be made to the Wishkah High School Athletic Department, Wishkah WA.
