Great write up!
Got to meet Vaughn Higbee at the UNR coaching clinic (Reno) way back in the 70's. We were both looking to improve our football programs. Me at Crescent, Vaughn at PV (Alamo). One year ago September I watch PV play @ Virginia City. VC actually was up by a TD or so for awhile in the 1st half, then got blown out in the late 3rd and 4th Q. VC is at 6,200 ft. elevation, hard to breathe. PV had some huge kids, big farm/ranch kids. One kid was a whopping 6'8" and near 300 pounds and 4 others were in the 6'4" range and well over 250 lbs. VC could not run up the middle but did have some success in the passing game and to the sidelines. The QB mentioned in the article was only a 9th grader for PV at the time but looked more like a 11-12 grader. Had a couple of good RB's that would run over people and one wide receiver that was flat out fast, got behind the VC DB's time after time on TD's. QB hardly ever missed his receivers on passes. VC has a field turf football field donated by some widow that got her $$$$$ from the mines beneath VC. Field cost over a cool million. You look to the North end of the field and up the hill is the town of VC, but on the South end you look over the valley below. There is a 1,000 ft. drop off into the canyon below. If not for the nets and high fence the balls kicked or thrown too far would wind up bouncing down the canyon walls all the way to the bottom. VC has been more noted for their basketball teams who have won many State Titles. This is a historic mining town with a storied past. If you ever get the chance to visit Virginia City do so, it is much the same today as it was back in the 1800's.
