I know the WIAA would have us believe that last weekend was part of the State tourney but, come on.... Any way, I see some pretty lopsided games on Thursday. At least with the 'old format' you could still see some competive games after the first 2 rounds. But now we have to wait until Friday to see good games. To a person, nobody I talked to liked this new format. It will be interesting to see what kind of spin the WIAA puts on this in a month or two.

Colbrese and his staff make $1.2 million. Colbrese gets $179 K for his share of the pie. This is why they went to new format, its all about the money. Screw the kids. Eastside should win every game on Thursday, however, I don't believe there will be any blow outs. JMO

I am not ready to count out MRL or CA yet. I'm not saying they WILL win, just that I think they CAN win. The east is better top to bottom in football and basketball, but that doesn't mean the top west teams are automatically inferior. ACH has already been upset once. In 08 when Wishkah went to Lacrosse Washtucna early in the season all the eastsiders said it was a fluke when Wishkah nearly upset them. They said the real Championship would be the Eastside semifinal and that LW would walk thru the title game only to have Wishkah give em everything they could handle again in a 64-62 final. Same this year when Cusick and ACH were considered the top 2 only to have Lummi swipe the title away. The eastside has good reason to be proud of their record against us, and have earned the right to be cocky, but I think these two squads have a chance to make some noise. JMO.

I hope you both are right. I just hate to see blow-outs at this time of the season

If the 1B's were still in Yakima I would be there but can't afford to go to Spokane. We have an all-weekend club Volleyball tourney to go to in a few weeks. ;D

Good point Chitwin 20 never mind our instant replay of "the spot" in the final game. But that is the nature of the game...never underestimate your opponents or it could bite you in the end.

[glow=red,2,300]Back to basketball.....[/glow]
Double play — Knights teams head to Spokane March 1, 2011 by Dave Thomas
YAKIMA, Wash. — Different routes, same destination.
Sunnyside Christian’s basketball teams are making what has become an annual trip to the Class 1B state quarterfinals, although these respective journeys were far from similar.
The boys, with virtually everyone back from last season’s championship team, including top scorers Steven Broersma, Trevor Wagenaar and Kevin De Jong, had the expectation that they could — maybe should — be playing for another title this time around.
“It’s been a tough year because expectations are so high,” coach Dean Wagenaar said of his 22-2 team before adding that the team has not only met those challenges but even elevated its game as the stretch run looms.
“Defensively, we’ve really turned it up the last three weeks,” the coach said, pointing to last Friday’s 51-33 win over a solid Moses Lake Christian team as exhibit A of that effort. “(This week) I expect us to play hard. I expect us to be confident. We’re a veteran team.”
The girls, meanwhile, were far from a veteran bunch, losing seven players, including most of the starters, off its 2010 fourth-place team. But this group rallied around its only seniors — Analisa Van Oostrum and Janelle DeGroot — with the younger players eventually settling into their roles to mold a team that’s got a good head of steam going to Spokane.
“They’ve worked hard … and have been very receptive to what we’re teaching,” coach Al Smeenk said of his 21-3 squad that won its opening-round state game 59-25 over Moses Lake Christian. “Both of our seniors work hard and the others have to follow their lead.
“We were young — we still are — and it took time for them to learn their roles. All the girls have stepped up and found their niche.”
While they took different routes to Spokane, both face similar challenges this week, with each team earning favorable quarterfinal pairings Thursday, with extremely difficult semifinal foes looming if they advance.
Sunnyside Christian’s boys open against Lummi at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Spokane Arena, with the winner likely getting Almira/Coulee-Hartline, the top-ranked 1B team for most of the season, in the semifinals.
“We will focus completely on Lummi because on Thursday, we can only play one team and we’ve been assigned to play Lummi,” Wagenaar said. “When you get to the postseason, we talk about one thing — advance, then worry about the next game. That works for me and I’m not going to change it.”
The girls will open against a young Mary M. Knight team at 10:30 a.m., with that winner probably going up against defending champion Colton.
Smeenk said he’s simply focussed on getting his team to play their best.
“All we ask is that when they’re on the floor, they’re focussed — and they are,” he said. “We’re one of the top eight teams and we’re thankful for that. If we can win a couple of games and get some hardware, that’s frosting on the cake.”
And something that would be particularly satisfying for this group.

Both games tomorrow night should be good ones. I'd sure like to be there to watch the SSC/Colton game though.

Thank you Neah Bay for breaking up the eastside no hitter in the ninth! Good luck in the title game!
