Well, it's here again. How is your track team shaping up to look this year? Lyle/Wishram has 10 boys and 9 girls. On the boys side 2 of note are back this season- Gabe Montoya (wasted took a year off to play baseball) and John Stephens (just wasted took a year off) are back on the team. Gabe should do well in the shot/discus. John should do well in both hurdles and maybe long jump. Both more than likely would have went to State in more than 1 event last year. There are some other talented kids but a couple with question marks- Is Chance Carpenter's 100%? On the girls side, we have some talented freshmen (Maelynn Luke, Kiya Childers) runners to go with some upper classmen (Suzanne McConnville, Jacqueline Diendorfer) and a thrower (Ellie Smith). Ellie's throws last year as an 8th grader would have had her medal at State (same weights).

MMK has limited numbers this year but a couple kids to watch Nick Dierkop in the hurdles and high/long jump. Hannah Frost in the disc and 800. There are a couple younger kids that just missed state last year and might make the jump this year.

Peninsula Daily News
PORT ANGELES — It was a track athlete’s nightmare. Not to mention a coach’s, volunteer official’s or spectator’s nightmare.
To say it wasn’t pleasant at Port Angeles High School’s huge invitational track and field meet Saturday is a vast understatement.
Longtime coaches were saying it was the worst conditions they have ever seen for a track meet as strong winds, heavy horizontal rain and cold winter-like temperatures made this an event not to forget.
The boys and girls pole vault events were nixed because of dangerous conditions, and most athletes waited in their school buses between their events to stay warm and dry.
Despite the conditions, though, there were some outstanding performances from area athletes as 22 boys and girls teams — all of the North Olympic Peninsula squads plus all but two Olympic League teams — participated in the early season meet.
There were five double winners from the North Olympic Peninsula, three in the girls competition where area athletes showed their best strength.
Port Angeles girls were runners-up while Sequim captured fourth, Port Townsend fifth and little 1B Crescent sixth, beating out bigger schools Olympic and Bremerton. North Kitsap dominated the girls events with 170.5 points while the Roughriders came in with 112 and Kingston was third with 105. Sequim had 72 for fourth.
The Olympic League controlled the boys action with mighty North Kitsap winning with 121 total points, Olympic second with 110 and Kingston third with 82.5.
Sequim was the top boys team in fourth with 76 while Port Angeles was right behind with 75 for fifth.
Crescent again proved it is a 1B power by taking seventh with 56.5 points. Area girls earning double wins were Jolene Millsap of Port Angeles, Jasmine McMullin of Sequim and Sydney Christensen of Forks.
Millsap had a time of 12.9 seconds in the 100-meter dash and a time of 27.05 in the 200 to win each event.
She also was runner-up in the 400 in 1:05.33.
McMullin, meanwhile, was first in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 2 inches and she claimed first in the triple jump with a distance of 32-07.
Christensen excelled in her throwing events, winning the shot put with a heave of 29-11.25 and the discus with a distance of 102-04.
Also winning an event was freshman Ryan Lester of Crescent, who captured the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.14 seconds.
Lester also took fifth in the 300 hurdles. Capturing second in two events was Elyse Lovgren of Port Angeles, who was runner-up in long jump in a distance of 14-09.25 and the triple jump in 32-01.5.
In all, seven area athletes finished in second place, including Millsap and Lovgren.
Others included Kari Larson of Forks in the 800 run in 2:37.27, Brittany Grant of Port Townsend in the 3,000 in 11:29.22, Rebecca Stewart of Port Townsend in the 300 hurdles in 53.45, Annika Pederson of Port Angeles in the 2,000 steeplechase in 8:41.99 and Faye Chartraw of Neah Bay in shot put with a distance of 28-02.50.
Grant also earned third place in the 1,500 in 5:19.40.
Five other individuals took bronze in their events while three relay teams also earned third place.
Individuals included Heidi Vereide of Sequim in the 200 in 28.62, Waverly Sheffler of Sequim in the 400 in 1:06.08, Willow Suess of Port Angeles in the 3,000 in 12:22.74, Patricia Reeves of Port Townsend in the high jump with a height of 4-08 and Shannon Williams of Crescent in the shot put with a heave of 27-07.75. Area athletes took the top four positions in shot with Cami Raber of Port Angeles earning fourth with a distance of 27-07.0.
Sequim had two relay teams earning third place, including the 4x100 of Sheffler, Sarah Hutchison, McMullin and Hannah Hudson in 55.81, and the 4x400 with Vereide, Sheffler, Hudson and McMullin in 4:35.72.
The Riders took third in the 4x200 relay with Cassidy Hodgin, Raber, Lovgren and Madison St. George in 2:03.65.
Two double winners
In boys competition, Brendan Dennis and Kyle Tupper, both of Port Angeles, were double winners.
Dennis claimed first place in the 400 in 53.17 seconds and the 800 in 2:05.09 while Tupper dominated the 1,500 with a win in 4:33.54 and the 3,000 in 9:54.27, better than nearly 26 seconds than the runner-up.
Also taking first place was Sequim’s Lopaka Yasumura in shot put with a distance of 45-06.50.
Showing some speed with strength, Yasumura also claimed second in the 100 sprint in 11.78 seconds.
Earning second in two events was Crescent’s Quenton Wolfer, who was runner-up in the discus with a throw of 100-05 and the javelin with a toss of 137-10.
Also taking second was the Sequim 4x100 relay team with Oscar Herrera, Dylan Chatters, Christian Miles and Yasumura in 46.24.
Earning two third-place honors was Mikey Cobb of Sequim, with a bronze in the 3,000 steeplechase in 10:58.52, and the 1,500 in 4:36.52.
Cobb was nipped by a nose in the 1,500 as Ian Christen of North Kitsap was second in 4:36.51.
Four other area individuals took third place, including Clallam Bay’s Justin Welever in the 100 in 11.83, Tony Dalgardno of Port Angeles in the 200 in 25.24, Ryan Clarke of Port Townsend in the 3,000 in 10:28.37 and Shane WhiteEagle of Forks in shot put with a distance of 43-01.
Also taking third was the Port Angeles 4x400 relay team of Dalgardno, Tupper, Nick Fritschler and Dennis in a time of 3:46.18.

Elma warms up blistery cold meet with team title sweep at Hoquiam
In the track and field version of “Survivor: Hoquiam,” Elma’s boys and girls won the final challenges.
The Eagles swept team honors in a four-school meet Wednesday at blustery Sea Breeze Oval.
Elma’s boys totaled 80 points to finish 10 in front of Hoquiam. The Eagle girls, with 104 points, outpointed the Grizzlies by 34.
A pair of 1B schools, Wishkah and Crescent, also competed respectably.
Frigid blasts off Grays Harbor threatened at times to turn Sea Breeze Oval into Gale Force Winds Oval in conditions ill-suited to the first day of spring. But rain fell only intermittently during the meet, as a heavier downpour passed before the first event.
The pole vault was scrapped and meet officials utilized an open pit in the jumps in an effort to speed along the proceedings.
Given the circumstances, the team scores took on even less weight than usual for a regular-season meet, as coaches limited some of their standouts to fewer events than usual.
Nevertheless, there was a surprising number of decent performances.
“We even had some PRs, which was amazing,” Elma coach Dave Beeler reflected.
Elma freshman Wesley Allen established personal bests of 5:04 and 11:04, respectively, in sweeping the boys 1,600 and 3,200.
Eagle senior Erick Atkins outdueled teammate Chance Bremer to take one of the better races of the day, in the boys 400.
Elma ace Ray Stark did not compete in either of the hurdles races after turning an ankle during the sprint relay. Beeler also cited Manny Torres for a three-foot PR in the shot.
While Hoquiam outdid the Elma girls in event wins (8-6), the Eagles used superior depth to prevail. Daphne Peek was a double winner in the girls distances.
With his reigning state 1A champion boys team already short-handed due to eligibility issues, Hoquiam coach Tim Pelan took a cautious approach in the deployment of his remaining troops.
“The strength of our team is our sprinters and jumpers and those are the kids who struggle in these conditions,” Pelan said.
Two-time state high jump champion Cole Smith, given the option to pass on his specialty, opted to compete and won the event anyway with a mark of 6-4.
Smith also had a good day in the throwing events, taking the javelin with a mark of 168-5 and the discus at 108-5.
Mikaila Johnson and Olivia Rose were three-time winners for Hoquiam’s girls. Johnson cleared 4-10 to take the high jump, took the long jump at 13-10 and anchored a victorious 4x200-meter relay team. Rose captured the 100 and triple jump and also participated on a winning relay team.
Pelan cited the performances of his relay units, plus Piper Sandstrom in running away with the girls 800, Devin Kelly in winning the boys 100 and Zach Phillips in taking the long hurdles.
Coming off its first boys meet win in 10 years, Wishkah also fared well against larger schools yesterday.
Keigan Gardiner was a double winner in the boys 200 and 110 high hurdles. Freshman Ryan Anderson nabbed the girls 400 and set a PR in the triple jump.
“I think we did very well today, considering the conditions,” Wishkah coach Bob Eager said. “We’re using it as a training situation. These kids, they’ve been working really hard this year.”

Crescent missing a few kids in the Hoquiam meet. Findley played in the 1B/2B All-Star game and missed this meet. He is over 40 ft in the Triple and close to 20 ft. in the Long in practice. Next meet for Crescent is the Mt. Lake Terrace Relays.

FROM: Darrell Yount, Crescent Track & Field
Crescent Invitational held Saturday, April 13: competed under cool and cloudy skies with periodic sun-breaks and eventual full-scale sunshine.
The Crescent Invitational lived up to its billing as "The fastest Show in Town", as a cold track was first heated by ultra-fast North Olympic League sprinters and then as a pleasant addition on this cool blustery day, eventual sunshine. And with a powerful Crescent Logger boys team scoring points in bunches enroute to a 174 point outburst and the team title and its own girls team doing it in similar fashion (128 points) on its way to a big runner-up finish to a powerful Class A, Cedar Park team, this meet had it all. The Port Townsend girls 4X200 relay team was the warm-up act, as they took that title in the meet's initial event and then it was the Crescent hurdlers turning up the heat as Quinn'Tinn March, fresh off a 'knee-to-lip' mishap during a hurdle race in Sequim on Thursday, scorched the track to a PR 18.01 win of the 110's and an opening of the flood-gates for his girl teammates: Devanie Christie dipping under 18 seconds for the first time (17.99) to lead a 1-2 Logger sweep with super frosh, Ryan Lester (18.20) and teammate Hannah Hendrickson 6th). Not to be outdone by this initial flash of Logger points, fellow NOL mate, ultra-fast Justin Welever of Clallam Bay, already the state's premier sprinter in Class 1B, raised the temperature on the already warmed track to scorch mode, ripping off a life-time and state leading PR 11.73 to run away with the 100m title. He would return later in the meet for an even more dominant win in the 200, leading an NOL sweep with Crescent's Eric Larson, winning 24.28 to 25.42 and holding his #3 state ranking in that race as well. And as would be appropriate with this flexing of NOL speed, the Crescent boy's 4X100 relay (48.86) would lead a 1-2-3 League sweep with Clallam Bay (49.70) and Neah Bay (52.0) and that was just to get the track to the right temperature for the very quick Logger girls team of Jandi Frantz, Lynn Grover, Lester and Kellie Belford, to run away with a huge 30m win in 56.94. Feeling the blast of heat from the track and now joined by mother nature's appearance of the sun, it was Crescent's field eventers time to shine as Big Josh Sowder put his 6-4, 265 pound frame into action to help lead Crescent's 1-2 sweep of all three throwing events: A big 41-0 shot put win over teammate Gene Peppard (38-6); a monster 131-08 state leading discus blast over Logger-mate Quenton Wolfer (115-7) and then turning it over to teammate Derek Findley. Findley had a monster day as he anchored the 4X100 relay to the big win and then added more fuel to the fire to keep the sweeps coming. First a 149-2 blast with his spear over Wolfer (146-2), then a big 18-04 long jump win and 1-2-3 Logger point outburst with Donovan Christie (17-7.5) and Larson (17-4.5) to go along with his triple jump title and his first 40 footer of the season. Christie (state's number two high jumper), not to be outdone, would conclude the field eventers big day with a huge clearance over 6 feet even in his specialty and the win to go along with his 6-0 earlier clearance in Sequim on Thursday. Wrapped around all that sprinting, jumping and throwing action was one unsung win for this powerful Logger team as super-sophomore, Martin Waldrip, quietly went about winning his specialty, the ultra-long 3200m, in a great finishing stretch-run duel over Port Townsend's, Ryan Clarke, in a not so quiet, state leader board #4 mark and win, 10:57.18 to 10:57.28.
"What a great meet. You know, in regards to the weather, it didn't start out that way. Absolutely poured rain the entire morning while setting up the meet venues. But then as the first buses began arriving, it just turned off. The blue skies appeared over the Strait and I knew we were in business. I was pleased with our athletes, as they really turned it up a notch. Our throwers and jumpers have been working hard all season so seeing them kind of come together a little bit with some very solid perfomances offers us a glimmer of where we may be heading. And great to see the work of our hurdles crew and relay folks paying off in terms of perfomance. Again, I emphasized to the team, we're nowhere near where we need to be, but we're getting closer and I like the direction we're heading. That speaks volumes in terms of their work ethic. And that they can be proud of. "

Grizzlies repeat as all-county champs
By Rick Anderson
The Daily World
Both competitively and weather-wise, the Grays Harbor All-County Track & Field Championships contained a little bit of everything.
The team champions, however, were very familiar.
Scoring heavily in the sprints and jumps, Hoquiam repeated as boys and girls team titleholders Saturday at Sea Breeze Oval.
The reigning state 1A champion Grizzlies totaled 187 points to beat runner-up Elma by 62.
Big boosts from Savannah Smith and Olivia Rose helped Hoquiam earn a surprisingly decisive girls victory. With 158 points, the Grizzlies wound up 39 1/2 ahead of Elma, with Montesano third at 117.
All eight Grays Harbor schools who offered track, however, captured at least one individual all-county title.
The best thing that could be said about the weather was that the competitors ran little risk of becoming overheated. Although rain fell only periodically (and spectators were also pelted by a brief hail storm early in the meet), a strong, frigid wind howled throughout. The concluding girls mile relay began in a squall — and ended in sunshine.
Despite a surprising number of good marks, no meet records were broken.
“Today, surviving the weather was priority No. 1,” Hoquiam coach Tim Pelan said. “(My kids) came out and competed. The weather didn’t faze them. Sometimes, these conditions built mental toughness.”
There were even a couple of mild upsets.
Wishkah’s Keigan Gardiner, who had established a new school record of 15.9 in the boys 110 hurdles two days earlier, was officially clocked at 15.94 (Logger coaches had him at 15.7) to upend Elma’s favored Ray Stark.
“He’s a gamer,” Wishkah assistant coach Dan Brown said. “You get him next to a fast kid and that’s how (he goes).”
Montesano’s Tyson Lovell may have pulled off the day’s biggest surprise by topping Aberdeen’s Poli Baltazar — who had pulled off a distance triple in last year’s all-county meet — in the boys 1,600.
Staying on Baltazar’s shoulder for the first three laps, Lovell surged into the lead early in the final 400 and won going away with a time of 4:37.0.
Lovell also won the 800 meters (in which Baltazar didn’t compete). The Aberdeen senior, however, quickly took charge in the 3,200, his strongest event, and beat Lovell by more than 100 meters.
Hoquiam’s Smith, who only became eligible this week and was competing despite a touch of the flu, topped a fast field in both girls sprints. She was also a member of a victorious 4x200 relay.
Teammate Rose was also a three-time winner, capturing both horizontal jumps and also running on Hoquiam’s winning 4x100 relay. Her 34-4 triple jump was only 7 3/4 inches shy of the meet record set by Elma’s Brandi Thomas in 1998.
Hoquiam’s Mikaila Johnson took the girls high jump at 4-10 and also had a hand in the 4x200 relay. Teammate Theresa Chapin won the pole vault.
Cole Smith was a two-time individual winner for Hoquiam’s boys, but this was a bittersweet day for the reigning two-time state 1A high jump champion.
After clearing a modest 6 feet on his initial jump, Smith missed three times at 6-4 — six inches below his personal best. The 6-foot jump, though, was sufficient for the title.
On the plus side, he won the javelin at 178 feet, a personal best by about five feet.
Grizzly senior Nolan Hoiness blazed home in 10.92, slightly faster than last year’s all-county time, to prevail in a highly competitive boys 100 meters.
Teammate Devin Kelly outdueled Hoiness in the 200. That duo joined Paul Girts and Tyler White on a sprint relay team that beat its nearest rival by more than four seconds in 45:06.
White also won the long jump at 19-4, while Hoquiam’s Zach Phillips took the pole vault.
Montesano junior Gabrielle Rudolph was in a class by herself in notching her second consecutive girls distance triple. She was not seriously challenged in any of the three events.
Monte’s Myranda Floch also had a productive day by winning the girls 400 and sharing in her school’s mile relay victory.
“We had some good performances today,” Bulldog girls coach Doug Schupbach related. “We were in every event we entered (on the girls side).”
He cited Floch and Kaitlyn Bradley, who established personal bests in the shot and discus, for particularly fine showings.
Montesano’s Tristan Darst won the boys 400.
Elma’s Stark rebounded from his loss to Gardiner by winning the long hurdles and also had a hand in a mile relay victory. Eagle senior Erick Atkins edged Monte’s Anthony Louthan in the boys 400 meters.
Aberdeen’s Shayna Wilson successfully defended last year’s girls javelin title and bettered last year’s mark by seven feet at 123-1. McKenzie Brooks was the Bobcats’ other all-county champion, in the girls 300 hurdles.
Two throwers accounted for three of North Beach’s four titles.
Crystal Lynch, one of the state 2B leaders in the girls shot and discus, won both events with tosses of 38-2 1/2 and 99 feet, respectively.
North Beach’s Caleb Bridge, who had set a school boys discus record of 142-1 1/2 on Thursday, was affected by the conditions Saturday but still won the event at 126-3.
Chloe Werner repeated as the girls 100 hurdles champion.
“The kids did well considering the conditions,” Hyak coach Bob Wiley noted.
Wishkah suffered a blow when Ethen Arnold, one of its top male runners, pulled up lame in the boys 100. The nature of his injury was immediately undetermined. That mishap aside, Wishkah coach Bob Eager was pleased with the efforts of both his boys and girls.
Taholah’s Joseph Winn won the boys shot.
Alex Herrera, in the boys triple jump, was the sole winner for Ocosta, which was short-handed due to conflicting commitments.
The meet was sponsored by Anchor Bank, the Hoquiam Elks Past Exalted Rulers Association, Grizzly Alumni Association and Hale Chiropractic. Pelan thanked volunteers who braved the adverse conditions to help conduct the meet.
Next year’s meet is tentatively scheduled for Montesano, if the East County school can resolve some track maintenance issues.

Chehalis Activators
CHEHALIS — Three Twin Harbors small-school athletes walked off Chehalis High School’s stadium on Saturday afternoon with championship titles around their necks after the annual Chehalis Activators track meet.
Wishkah’s Keigan Gardiner and North Beach’s Caleb Bridge and Crystal Lynch won one event each, with Gardiner resetting a school record in the process.
Gardiner, a junior, won the 110-meter high hurdles at 15.89 seconds, bettering the previous school record of 16.1 set by Ben Clark in 2009. The Logger got some competition from Rochester’s Cody Triana, who helped push him throughout the race.
“Keigan was about 2-3 steps ahead of him; it was a really nice race for both,” Wishkah head coach Bob Eager said. “He works hard, has good grades. He’s a nice kid and I’m happy for him. Overall, the meet was good for the kids. It was a great weekend.”
