Straughan, UI have Night to Remember
Colton Grad Scores 24 Points in Vandals 127-54 Victory
By Sean Kramer, Spokesman Review Correspondent, 12/19/2015
MOSCOW, Idaho – Knowing the same struggle his fellow scout-team member endures as a young player adjusting to Division-I basketball, Skyler White made a habit Friday night to give Jake Straughan a special shout-out every time the local product splashed in a 3-pointer.
It happened a lot.
Straughan, a Colton High School graduate, connected on seven of his last 10 3-point attempts in the second half and led Idaho with a career-high 24 points in a 127-54 romp over New Hope Christian at the Cowan Spectrum.
The 127 parts are an Idaho record.
New Hope is in Eugene and competes in the National Christian College Athletics Association.
Straughan finished 8 of 14 from beyond the arc and White logged in his first double-double with a career-high 11 points and 10 rebounds in 15 minutes of action.
The two players had combined for 47 minutes coming into Friday night’s contest, mainly playing in garbage time, and contributed on the scout team in practice.
The starters went nuts for every basket the two accumulated.
“We’re a really close-knit team … but we have our little scout team group, when we get in, everybody on the team is supporting us, it’s just great,” White said. “It gives you that little extra motivation, that boost to play better and makes it fun.”
Idaho’s bench antics were at a season high when Straughan started his onslaught in the second half. Victor Sanders emphatically saluted when Straughan connected on three straight attempts in an 80-second span midway through the second half.
Straughan missed his next two then made his next four attempts, including three in a 65-second span with under three minutes left in the contest. Redshirting guard Myles Franklin broke out the 3-point goggles for a few of those.
“This is obviously a career night for me, it was fun to get out there and get a lot of minutes,” Straughan said. “My teammates were there for me, they were getting me the ball when I got hot. I came from a really small school, I wasn’t supposed to be here, it’s nice being successful at this level.”
Other notable stats for reserves included junior guard Pat Ingram tying for a game-high nine assists, Jordan Scott grabbing six offensive rebounds and freshman Nick Blair scoring a career-high 10 points, a few of them on two-hand dunks.
“That’s one thing about this team is I’ve got a lot of guys who work hard and it’s good to get them some minutes,” Idaho coach Don Verlin said.
Idaho jumped out to a 20-0 lead, dominating the Deacons with its size in the pack-line zone defense. New Hope was held to 18 of 62 from the field, including 11 of 46 from 3-point range.

Jake Straughan Pushes Idaho Past Northern Colorado
ESPN Spokane, Published Feb 11 2016 10:28:28 PM PST
Jake Straughan stepped up in a major way to help lead Idaho (15-10, 7-5 BSC) past Northern Colorado (8-16, 5-7 BSC), 73-67. The redshirt freshman played just 15 minutes, but finished with a game-high 23 points.
“I thought they played with more energy than us in the first half,” head coach Don Verlin said. “But I thought our team responded and played really hard. We were able to lock them down, hold them to one shot and make it tough on them to score.”
Idaho trailed by two at the half, but came out with a fire in the second half. The Vandal defense stepped up, allowing just nine rebounds in the second half. Idaho held the Bears to 38.5 percent shooting in the frame, while forcing eight turnovers. Idaho looked everywhere for offense in the second half, with eight different Vandals scoring. Ty Egbert got things done early, grinding down low. Arkadiy Mkrtychyan played limited minutes due to foul trouble, but was effective on the offensive end when needed the most. Senior leader Chris Sarbaugh and Straughan closed out the game at the free throw line, hitting 7-of-8 combined in the final 30 seconds.
Straughan was untouchable on the night, hitting 6-of-7 shots from beyond the arc. He got things started early, with the Vandals trailing by 13 and just over five minutes to play in the opening half. Straughan went on a one-man run, draining his first four 3-point attempts over a three-plus minute stretch to keep the game close at the break.
“Jake came in and made a bunch of shots,” Verlin said. “I thought we did a good job of executing our offense, I thought our point guards did a good job of finding Jake and I thought our big guys did a good job of finding Jake. And Jake knocked them down. He’s a good shooter, he’s been a good shooter his whole life.”
